About

Melissa Ferrick is back - with her first self-produced album since 2004, the truth is (2013). An evolution in the sound she has developed over the course of her expansive career and catalog, the record is also a creative departure in its collaborative approach to the recording process for the multi-instrumentalist. The result is a raw, rootsy record set to a sweeping Americana/alt-country soundtrack that layers pedal steel guitars and background harmonies into some of the lushest, brightest songs of her 20-year career; special guests include fellow Berklee alum Paula Cole and Rose Polenzani

Signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-‘90s, Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock females—including artists like Liz Phair and PJ Harvey—who sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act. Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a string of albums and EPs (more than 16 to date) in which she played almost every instrument herself. She tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S.

Ferrick, an eight-time Boston Music Award winner, signed with NY-based MPress Records and released Still Right Here (2011). The album debuted on Billboard's Heatseekers Album Charts, won an 8th annual International Acoustic Music Award (IAMA) and garnered two Independent Music Award (IMA) nominations. The title track's music video premiered on the launch of Huffington Post's Gay site and won two RightOutTV awards. In 2011, Ferrick was a featured music honoree in OUT Magazine's OUT100 - focusing on artists who make an impact on the community.

Regarded as one of the most prolific & hardworking artists in the industry, Ferrick tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S., performing upwards of 100 shows a year. She has shared the stage with Morrissey, Marc Cohn, Paul Westerberg, Dwight Yoakam, John Hiatt, Weezer, Tegan and Sara, G-Love & Special Sauce, Dan Bern, Ani DiFranco, k.d. Lang, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Mike Doughty, The Indigo Girls and among many others.

Melissa Ferrick's "the truth is" Fall 2013 CD Release Tour - U.S. Dates Confirmed with Ani Di Franco

Boston-based singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick confirms more U.S. dates for her the truth is CD Release Tour, including shows with Ani DiFranco and Anne Heaton. MPress Records released "the truth is", the latest album from the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist in early June. Ferrick celebrates by extending the CD release tour through the year, taking her to markets she hasn't been to in years. Full list of tour dates at MelissaFerrick.com.

"the truth is" marks a creative departure for Ferrick in its collaborative approach and an evolution in the sound she has developed over the course of her expansive career and catalog. Recorded live with a full band and produced by Ferrick, mixed by Grammy Award winner Trina Shoemaker (Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow) and engineered by Rafi Sofer (James Taylor, Juliana Hatfield), the truth is manages to tread new ground while still maintaining a strong relationship with Ferrick's older work.

Ferrick is joined by Natalia Zukermanon vocals, lap steel and dobro, Matt Pynn (Lucinda Williams, Evan Dando) on pedal steel, Richard Gates (Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega) on bass, Ro Rowan (Bob Forrest, Tiffany) on cello and both Steve Scully (Howie Day, Juliana Hatfield) and Dave Brophy (Will Daily, Patty Larkin) on drums. Boston-based collaboratorsAnne Heaton and Rose Polenzanishow up to sing backing harmonies, and fellow Berklee College alum Paula Cole appears as guest vocalist with Ferrick on the album’s first song, “Wreck Me.”

As Ferrick’s devoted fans will expect, the truth is explores personal, emotional territory, documenting the end of one relationship and the subsequent beginnings of another. Signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-‘90s, Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock females—including artists like Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and college-mate Cole—who sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a string of albums and EPs (more than 16 to date) in which she played almost every instrument herself. She tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S.
